The Tower Notre Dame "Tour Charles
Quint" |

|
|
At
present the Tower houses exhibitions
during the summer season (from May
to September). Officially named the
Tour Notre Dame, it is more usually
called the " Tour Charles Quint "
(or the " Charles V Tower ").
According to historians, it was
built in the eleventh century as
part of the ramparts and served as a
watch tower. In 1536, inhabitants of
Le Muy took up defence positions
within the building in order to
assassinate the Emperor Charles V of
Spain who had invaded Provence and
was approaching Le Muy. Halted by
the resistance put up by the local
men, the Emperor promised not to
harm them if they gave themselves
up. They did, but were hanged
nonetheless. During the assault, the
Spanish poet Garcilaso de la Vega, a
captain in the imperial army, was
mortally wounded and died later in
Nice. |
